DARRYL’S DIARY: TO LOVE OR NOT TO LOVE

Olatinwo Tolulope

It’s 5am here in Allen avenue within a block of flats, with cars all parked outside and the security lights showing on all the darkness that loomed over 4D Hermes Estate. The noise of the crickets renting the air suddenly gets disturbed by the sound of an alarm going off in one of the rooms.

Oh No!!!.. Its 5am already? Argh, why can’t the weekend just last longer???

All grumbling and tired, a lone masculine figure gets up to sit on the bed and stares into the nothingness of the morning that was just about to rise, only to be knocked out of his mind by the alarm again.

With one fiery slam of his palm, the alarm silences as he makes his way to put on the light and make the million mile journey to the bathroom to get ready for the day.

Have you ever wondered that despite sleeping so deeply and having the reluctance to get up, once you step into the bathroom, as soon as you turn on the shower and the cold water splashes on your face, the sleep disappears? Oh well, it does for me.

Before I wallow into the misery of looking for the outfit for the day, I finally settled for a plain blue shirt and blue Vickers trousers with black shoes.

Oh sorry! I did not mention my name, pardon my manners, I rarely have people check on me or have me tell them the story of my boring and uneventful life like I am doing now.

My name is Agbolade Tunji Darryl, but you can call me Darryl. Anyways, back to the order of the day, I walk down a flight of stairs to the car park where my Toyota Camry car has its space, I greet my neighbours on my way down – the ones who care to answer because I do them no honor of looking into their faces while I walk by. I start my car and find my way to the gate. “Adamu, how far?’ to which he replies “Oga D, I dey ooo” as I drive off.

While trying to maneuver my way to work, I pick up my phone to check for notifications but I get no joy from it. It was just a meager 2 sms and 3 whatsapp messages.

The whatsapp messages were prayers for the new week from my mum and another from my dad, then the last one from my church. Whereas the 2 SMS was from airtel thanking me for subscribing for a month which I do like 6 times in that same month and a reminder of my data cap.

No sweet “good morning” messages and text? oh well. I guess I lead that boring life after all.

Some heavy paperwork and a report on a prospective acquisition for my company was waiting to recieve me on my desk. I love my work and I enjoy what I do, it serves as an escape for my boring life and I maintain a professional work ethic in my office environment so much that none of my coworkers has my whatsapp number or anything, they just forward it all to my mail. Did I hear you say “no wonder your life is boring?” maybe you are right, but I enjoy the peace that comes with it.

How time flies when you do what you enjoy, I was done at work in no time and headed home to my caveman lifestyle again. I pulled in to find some cartons offloaded in my parking space and a lady likely in her mid 20s trying with all her power to move them. I sat in my car to watch how she was going to move those cartons unless she had superpowers.

I was forced to go help her with whatever she was doing else she would spend all day there until help came. I pulled off my seatbelts and opened my car, not knowing that my whole life was about to take on an exhilarating ride.
