FROM SOUTHSIDE BENIN CITY TO LAGOS – EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH APEX AND BIONIC

Apex and Bionic

Interviews for me are never just questions and answers to script and post, I love stories so much and this must be the one-millionth time I am going to be saying this. I had the pleasure of sitting faced with the loaded duo, Andrew and Daniel Omokhudu (Apex and Bionic) to hear their story about growing up in Southside Benin city and moving to Lagos to pursue their dreams.

It was more of a conversation than a themed interview (that’s the style with me). We spent well up to 2 hours reflecting on their background, their experiences in the industry, putting it all in their music, their latest body of work, and the point where they are in their lives right now.

In Apex’s words:

“We grew up in a very dangerous hood where everything wrong was happening. There were robbers, Yahoo boys, there was prostitution. It was the cycle we grew up around. It was just me, Bionic, and every other craziness around us.”

Garnering experience on the job for me is not exclusive to the desk skills of writing, creating contents, or directing. My exposure extends to the interpersonal realm where I am willing to learn something new about different talents, their culture, beliefs, stories, and their places of coming from.

Apex and Bionic move with an energy you must agree with.

I don’t want to use the cliché term that they are a vibe. They are more than that, they are a force. They have done the assignment that any two individuals who coexist as one body must do.

Their #NobodyHoly LP is a body of work brimmed with all that they’ve known and learnt as they sojourn in life through the Nigerian music industry. This also makes Apex and Bionic the first African artists to drop a music and movie body of work at the same time with a heavy feature of singers and actors.

I couldn’t but wonder how they landed themselves such a lineup of collaborations on their album, I am talking about Davido, 2Baba, Seyi Shay, Slimcase, Oritsefemi. There cannot be too much said about Apex and Bionic if not even less. They shared more on their sleepless nights, strengths, and weaknesses as individuals.

Moments behind the scene, getting familiar with them defined their individual personalities. I can say that Apex and Bionic are the warmest singers I have ever come across yet.
