DARRYL’S DIARY: THE BEGINNING OF A JOURNEY

It’s a Tuesday when I do nothing else other than going to work and returning home. Stepping out after my morning rituals, I was greeted by a lady figure right beside my car. I wanted to fully digest the sight of the backside I was seeing but then she turned around and said “you are 5 minutes late.” Shocked, I replied “good morning Lo” and made my way into the car as she stepped in after me.

“Hi, how are you doing today? How was your night?” the barrage of questions were becoming so much that it looked strange because I was used to the silence that accompanied me every morning to work.

As I turned on the ignition and picked my phone to check on some notifications, I saw probably the most clean thighs I have ever seen in my life, “ sharpaly, I clear my eyes comot, con dey reserve out of the park”. “Wetin dey do me?” I threw myself into thoughts for so long I didn’t notice her saying this and that, I just saw her mouth moving.

“Here we are” I said as I made a stop at the front of a purple building with the signage clearly stating “Lilies and co.” She said thank you and got down. With my work place just 2 blocks away, I got in few moments after her, packed my car and went about my day.

Tuesdays are for more briefings and initialization of enquires into prospective acquisitions and mostly for calls from my siblings requesting for money. I figured they don’t do that on a Monday. It’s 1pm and I’m on my way out of the board meeting, only to get a call that somebody has asked to see me. Me? I rarely get visitors asides my mum who calls before coming, so who could this be? I got to my office to meet Lo’s figure sitting and waving at me.

How did you get here and what are you doing here??? I asked before she said she waited to see where I’d pull up and she saw me alight, so she guessed this was where I worked and she decided to try. Okay, you don’t keep tabs on me like that, please. I asked her why, then she said she was done around and didn’t know her way around hence she checked with her “friendly neighbour.” The whole scene was becoming a sight for onlookers and co-workers so I ushered her in to sit in my office while I got done at work.

She barely said a word unless when I chipped in to ask if she was comfortable, to which she gracefully nodded her head. I didn’t look into her eyes that much so as to avoid noticing things about her.

I got done at work and we both walked towards the car park where some of my co-workers did not stop stealing glances at me and the lady beside me of course. I saw the surprise on their faces when Lo stepped into my car and we took off.

I was hungry and I asked if she was too? I stopped by the eatery to get us some take-away and drove straight home without uttering a word. She thanked me for the food and everything, I gave her the last comfortable smile I could afford that would not make her get the wrong message. I took to the stairs like a salamander takes to water before she gets to ask more question.
