Nike Art Gallery

It was a weekend with not so solid plan, I wasn’t sure if I’ll be making it to Nike Art Gallery or not but one natural way or the other I made it there. Do you want to know how?  Okay I got to Nike Art Gallery by taking a bus to Ikate junction then I crossed to the other side of the road where Nike Art Gallery was sitting in all of its glory at Lekki/Epe Expressway.

Welcoming smile’s a thing for me, I was pleased to have gotten a lot of that at stepping one foot in. When we talk about galleries in the world, Nike Art Gallery would sure be flagging high among top ten galleries in Africa. There are other branches in Osogbo, Kogi and Abuja.

I believe the attendants are used to people like us who go there to keep saying whao like ambulance and take pictures (lol). I was briefed about the magnificent gallery and simply instructed not to take full pictures of any of the works but allowed to pose for some.

All the glorious works of art in Nike Art Gallery were Nigerian made OMG! I could swear the three story building is worth billions. I was forced to shut my jaws when I saw some white folks walked in, pointed some arts, swiped the card, sung goodbye and left. Aye mi oooo! They no even snap pikshur, na these ones mean business.

The loud sound of a falling object brought me back to life, I did not want to believe it was happening around me chai I aff die today moku! There I had it, a cute sculptured jug fell when I absentmindedly moved close to it. Gbese!!! The sound alerted the attendant who appeared before me in a blink. “Eeerrrm sis, I did not touch anything, I was just going. . . .” I began to stutter. She had that relaxed look I could not trust for a second because I knew events might not be in my favour.

She told me to just chill for her to talk mama about it, my heart started racing. This will not be good I swore! I couldn’t chill as told, I paced downstairs with her to hear the outcome. She kept on signaling to me to take a chill pill, by then I was forced to sit down not to look like an entire nuisance. I already looked like shit while I waited.

Mama obviously had more important guests she was attending to, I kept on seeking answers from the lady’s numb face. I was beginning to sweat, I outrightly condemned myself that I won’t be able to afford the broken item.

The lady approached me to tell me it’s fine. Huh, you say what??? She said mama said it’s fine that I can go unpunished. Jeeeeeeez. I borrowed a smile for the relief. I asked if I could see Mama myself, I waited in my best behaved mode as I approached her. “Emabinu ma, mi o mon.” (I’m sorry ma, it wasn’t intentional)

She went; “common my dear it’s just a jug naa. I will have my people fix it.” She smiled back and hugged me. I dare not go back into the gallery, I took the rest of my pictures outside with my hands in the right place.

I told my friends about my experience when they wanted to see the place. I met Mama again and we took a picture together.
